Dominic Raab resignation shows civil servants don’t know what real bullying is: Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield

When I hear about how the Deputy Prime Minister is alleged to have bullied civil servants I am inclined to think they do not know what real bullying is and wonder what they would have made of the actions of certain people I have come across in my long lifetime.

At school we had a headmaster who would cane any pupil he considered to have broken any of the many rules of the school.

There were only two occasions when his bullying came to roost.

The first was when he caned a girl and her little mother came to school. She was like a little terrier and promised to put the cane where he would feel uncomfortable.

The second was when he was about to cane a biggish lad who told him, “My dad says if you hit me I have to hit you back and I will.” The caning was cancelled.

When I was a recruit in the RAF we were sworn at and made to run round the square holding a rifle weighing 9lbs above our heads for quite minor infringement of our corporal’s idea of what was correct behaviour.

As an apprentice I was cursed for wasting a piece of quality timber.

Later, as a trainee constable I had my weekend leave stopped for leaving the centre without permission.

I came through it stronger and able to stand up to those who attempted to bully me.

The would-be bullies discovered I was not going to take any rubbish from anyone.
