Elderly lose pension credit

THE Tories were quick to tell us about the stealth taxes implemented by the Labour government. Maybe one of their supporters could explain the stealth reduction this year of the pension credit payments.

First implemented by the Labour government and increased every year under them, we now find that the “nasty party” has decided, quietly, to reduce these payments to retired OAPs. Why?

Cameron is quite prepared to continue with overseas aid to nuclear power Pakistan but takes money away from his own old people. Is this another reason why his party is labelled the “nasty party”?

Victorian values

REGARDING the story of a mayor acquitted of soliciting (Yorkshire Post, March 15), this reminds me of Prime Minister Gladstone in Victorian times. He would occupy his time in the evenings by going out, alone, to save prostitutes in the back streets. Nobody made anything of it. How times change. Maybe we are more Victorian than the Victorians?

Better world

IF only those dreadfully self-centred and despicable dictators such as Gaddafi and Mugabe would substitute their utterly unacceptable love of power for the power of love, thus allowing us all to abide in a much more settled and stable world. The simmering tension pervading the Middle East (and Zimbabwe) together with the self-inflicted mayhem, could, and should be so readily arrested – if only!

IT has been recently revealed in the media that retired racehorses are very badly looked after.

Is it about time that racegoers are charged a gate levy, let’s say £1 per person at every race meeting, to raise a retirement fund?
