Fears over care systems at home for elderly

From: Keith Chapman, Custance Walk, York.

Looking at this new service that will save the health service financially, care in the home provision seems the way forward for the community. That all looks wonderful using technology but when it goes wrong then it isn’t that wonderful is it? You hope those that are introducing these systems and promoting them do have back-up from all the utility services before sending anyone home to carry on with hospital care?

Reading comments from a member of a well-recognised welfare association for the elderly in York of those getting on in years on a situation of reduction in hospital services, it is indeed a modern approach to care these days as we know it and it has the support of many out there within the community.

The biggest fear is with those being treated at home discharged from hospital, utilities such as heating, power and water may be disrupted at any time through power cuts due to weather and other conditions which could make someone exceedingly vulnerable and severely disadvantaged.

If this did happen, how long would one have to wait for the service to be reinstated?
