Fighting the good fight

From: Elizabeth Crabtree, Fairfax Road, Cullingworth, Bradford.

I WAS very interested to see your archive picture of Leonora Cohen (Yorkshire Post, October 5), apparently the oldest surviving suffragette.

My husband and I met her once while staying at a vegetarian guest house in Derbyshire (she was a life-long vegetarian). She was over 90 then, and I was surprised to find her, sitting in the garden, reading a newspaper (without glasses). During the Votes for Women era she was jailed for breaking windows and went on hunger strike. It seems almost unbelievable now, in our era of equality of the sexes, but we need to remember how hard some important things are won.

Coast guards

WE hear and read many articles regarding RAF Bomber Command and RAF Fighter Command and the exploits of their crews during the Second World War, but we hear very little, if anything, about RAF Coastal Command. As far as I can recall, they did a very good job keeping our coastal waters clear of the enemy and submarines, etc. and deserve a mention sometimes.

Poppy protocol

From: John Jones, Wetherby Road, Harrogate.

WITH reference to the letter about poppies from J Halkon (Yorkshire Post, November 9), like my father before me, I only wear my poppy on Remembrance Day, Remembrance Sunday and any official parade. Both he and I served in the Armed Forces and he was wounded in the Second World War. I know the meaning of the poppy and I know when it should be worn. It is not a piece of jewellery.
