Get the name right

From: Edward Dixon, Derbyshire Lane, Sheffield.

Like Michael Storey (Yorkshire Post, February 23) I am always amused and occasionally faintly irritated by references to ‘The Humber’ as a geographical area.

What is wrong with describing the part of our region in question as East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, which would at least be accurate?

Thank goodness we have, at least, been mercifully rid of that horrible name “Humberside”, even though it lives on in the title of the police force that serves the north and south banks of the mighty river.

Still, things could have been worse. When boundary changes in that part of the country were first considered prior to the second world war, one bright spark in Whitehall came up with an administrative region with Hull at its heart and the suggested name “Humberopolis”.

One shudders at the very thought.

Sell aircraft carriers to Saga

From: David H Rhodes, Keble Park North, Bishopthorpe.

Let’s think outside the box. The government has a spare aircraft carrier on its hands which I hope they are not going to do a “Nimrod” on.

My suggestion is that they sell it off to Saga Holidays, or some similar firm, to convert into a cruise liner.

Just imagine being able to fly in and land on board – a holiday first and the cash returned to the Treasury.

Boat Tip

From Mrs Maureen Ralph, York Road, Leeds.

Good luck to those attempting to save the Bridlington Coble (Yorkshire Post, February 19).

If its members are having difficulty raising funds, surely the East Riding Council should step in and assist in obtaining lottery funding or other available grants.

After all, the boat is part of the resort’s heritage, and, if preserved for future generations, would repay the time and effort by becoming a tourist attraction.
