Help is at hand with controlling cat population

From: Fiona Lemmon, Clifton Byres, Clifton, Maltby, Rotherham.

I WRITE in response to Fiona Evans’ article (Yorkshire Post, May 17) about the family of three cats and 10 kittens “donated” to Yorkshire Cat Rescue at Haworth.

I am alarmed at the donor’s lack of knowledge of financial and other support regarding neutering cats. I had a feral feline family take up residence in my garden last summer. I contacted all local animal welfare and rescue charities and found the veterinary surgery that I use very helpful regarding contacts in neutering services. I was offered support by Rotherham Rescue Rangers but was able to access funding from Cats Protection. I am most grateful to everyone concerned and all the cats have been neutered.

The hardest part was catching them!

I think there must be a general lack of knowledge about animal support services locally, regionally and nationally. I am sure we all agree that neutering is essential to control the numbers of cats and dogs so it seems important to me that animal charities should be more proactive in promoting neutering services and what funding streams are available.

This kind of activity could be carried out by trained volunteers giving talks in schools, for example.
