January 30 Letters: Where is evidence BBC chair is ‘left-wing’?

i WISH to comment on Colin Holland’s letter (The Yorkshire Post, January 23) regarding the new chairwoman of the BBC Trust, in which he states “we now have a left wing quango queen in charge of the Trust who is married to a BBC employee”.

Rona Fairhead CBE is a former chief executive of the Financial Times Group, who took over from Lord Patten of Barnes, a rather well-known Tory.

She was educated at Yarm Grammar School and St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, where she was the president of the university’s law society and graduated with a double first in law. She later obtained a Masters in Business Administration at Harvard. Her business career includes stints at Morgan Stanley and British Aerospace. She has also sat on the board of companies including HSBC and PepsiCo.

It seems to me this lady has a vast knowledge of the business world.

When asked about her political views she said: “I have never in my life been politically active. It’s not my husband (who has been a Tory councillor) who’s applying for this role, it’s myself.”

To also dispel the left wing bias myth, she was recommended as the preferred candidate for the position by the present Culture Secretary Sajid Javid, a Tory.
