Knowledge that is not so general

From: John Rookes, Blake Close, Bramley, Rotherham.

AFTER many frustrating years, I have finally decided to vent my frustration regarding your general knowledge crossword setter in Saturday’s Yorkshire Post.

I pride myself in my ability to complete crosswords but find his general knowledge is not so general. General knowledge is supposed to test your brain, not your access to a computer. Am I the only person with this opinion?

READING about the late John Barry, I feel rather sad. Why you may ask? The reason is because my late father-in-law, Fred Gibson of Haxby Road, York, taught John to play the trumpet with lessons given at this address.

It seems sad that the stars get mentioned, but not some of the early teachers.

Snail mail

From: Fr Ian Rutherford, Low Grange View, Leeds.

I WAS somewhat surprised to receive a letter on February 5 from the chief executive of Leeds City Council dated October 28, 2010 (in reply to mine dated October 26). I thought it might have been a delay in the postal system, only to see it was posted on February 4. I wonder if this is a first instalment of the cuts in staffing in the Civic Hall?

Blunt English

From: Roger M Dobson, Ash Street, Cross Hills, Keighley.

WHAT a lot of codswallop from Dr Tony McCobb (Yorkshire Post, February 7). I thought East Yorkshire was still a part of our great county of Yorkshire where blunt English is both spoken and understood.

Spot on

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Acomb, York.

PRIEST Neil McNicholas is spot on with his views on the disciplining of children (Yorkshire Post, February 8), but very sadly those in power and influence tend to disagree with him.
