Letter: Any ideas about metal 'structure'?

Nearby to the latter I came across a seemingly antiquated structure comprising of a low, semi-circular brick wall with metal “pipe” sticking up from it, nestling in the hedgerow .

I can’t recall seeing it on the same walk undertaken on previous occasions over the last three or four years or so; and wondered if any of your readers could shed any light as to what the structure was and what purpose it served.

It’s aside the coastal cliff top path quite near to the edge of the cliffs less than a mile from Kettleness and partially covered in vegetation, which presumably covers it completely later on in the year when the said vegetation has grown, hence hiding it from view.

The photo of the “structure” is near a way marker post signed Helmsley and Filey that is some 100 yards along the path from the structure when travelling in the direction of Kettleness.

Perhaps it was something to do with old alum workings? Or an old well?

Have the cliffs eroded back significantly since it was put in place?
