M-way solution to the HS2 ‘toy’

From: Peter L Langton, Bark Lane, Addingham, Ilkley.

WE should not allow control freak politicians to play with useless expensive toys, like trams and HS2.

The best thing to spend money on for the good of the United Kingdom would be to revive the plan to extend the M11 northwards, helping King’s Lynn and Lincoln – bringing genuine benefit to Grimsby, Immingham and long-suffering Hull, making maximum use of that engineering ready-made masterpiece of a bridge, and then, bringing the beautiful Yorkshire East Coast holiday resorts within easy reach of national and international tourists.

Not to mention the colossal benefit that would accrue to the great Geordie complex of the North East, and the historic Northumberland coast. Then to Edinburgh.

Most of all though, this road could well help to convince the Scots to stay within the Union.

Dearth of detail
about deaths

From: David H Rhodes, Keble Park North, Bishopthorpe, York.

MEETING up with a couple of old school mates recently (they came up from London), I was disappointed to learn that at another schoolfriend’s funeral only two “old boys” attended.

Asking myself why I wondered if the obituary notices contained enough information. There will be many people with the same name as friends from years gone by so reading these notices one questions are they the person I once knew?

Maybe newspapers could persuade the contributor to include a few youthful facts such as school attended and/or place of work, thus reducing the vagueness as to who the person was.

If people are in the know they can make arrangements to attend – I would have liked to show my respects to my friend mentioned earlier.

RE the HS2, why not put it underground?
