March 3 Letters: A game where the oligarchs make the rules

From: ME Wright, Grove Road, Harrogate.

JAYNE Dowle is learning the hard way that, in 21st century Britain, while “service” is endlessly promised, “competition” is the overriding obsession (The Yorkshire Post, February 23).

We are governed by oligarchs who chase each other,
and the rest of us, around a succession of illusory Eton playing fields, the game being entirely predictable for
them and far more relevant than the outcome which most of us enjoy.

The team captains and their chums continue to gather in the clubhouse for in depth discussions on how to dodge tax and not get caught.

Although we were not informed at the time, back in the 1980s, the term “service” as we understood it, was deemed a dirty word and stealthily redefined as being whatever distant “theys” may or may not deign to provide.

Sorry Jayne, but I suppose
that people like you and me –
to make use of the current ghastly vernacular – need to
get real.
