March 7: The many achievements of Waddingtons chief

YOUR obituary (The Yorkshire Post, February 28) of my brother, Victor, gave a very good account of his achievements with Waddingtons and within the printing industry.

May I add one or two other aspects of his life – simply to indicate how wide were his interests and achievements?

In addition to Waddingtons, he was President of the Leeds and Holbeck Building Society, Chairman of John Foster plc, Chairman of Yorkshire Television and was a non-executive Director of Stylo and (until quite recently) Topps Tiles. He became President of the Leeds Chamber of Commerce. For many years he was Chairman of the Governors of Gateways School in Harewood and a very active executive member of the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, together with the West Riding Opera company.

He was President of the regional Mencap organisation and a leading supporter of Martin House Hospice. In recognition for all this work, Victor became High Sheriff of West Yorkshire in 1989 and was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant. He was President of the Royal Warrant Holders Association and received a CBE in 1987. He was an honorary doctor of the two Leeds Universities.
