More fool Boris Johnson if he backs Gavin Williamson – Yorkshire Post Letters

WEEKS ago, when I read about the general approach of the model developed by Ofqual and used by the exam boards to produce the A-level and GCSE results this year, I predicted the chaos and anger that would follow.

The question I want to ask is – if I could see this coming, why couldn’t Gavin Williamson, Boris Johnson and their advisors. Maybe they did and don’t particularly care?

The chaos seen was totally predictable and Gavin Williamson, who is ultimately responsible for this, should be seriously considering his position.

I REFER to the articles by Tom Richmond and Andrew Vine (The Yorkshire Post, August 18) and how I agree with both writers.

This Government (I feel the term to be a misnomer) must be the worst in many years. The Cabinet comprises so many yes men, promoted above their capabilities, and seen to be floundering at every turn.

Our Prime Minister is seen as blundering fool, not only in this country but abroad also. I know as I have family living in Europe who report back and can’t believe half they see on the TV.

At the VJ Day celebrations, he looked so dishevelled in dress and hair.

All the veterans ( most in their 90s) put him to shame. I agree that Gavin Williamson has to go, but will this Prime Minister have the strength to do it?

From: JG Riseley, Harcourt Drive, Harrogate.

STUDENTS have grasped the zeitgeist; that what matters is not the justice or rationality of your case but how upset you can appear to be about it and that imperviousness to reason is a battle winner.

Examining boards rightly anticipated teachers’ lack of professionalism inflating results, though perhaps not the scale of this.

But they were unrealistic to imagine that their planned adjustment could claw back the overly generous results once these had become known and owned by the students.

If they wanted to avoid 2020 becoming the year of joke results, they should have told each school how many of each grade they could award for a particular subject and left them to
match these grades up to their students.

Only one set of grades would have emerged from the
smoke-filled room.

I HAVE voted Conservative all my adult life but now am beginning to wonder why I have done so. I feel I cannot vote Labour, but the current mess Boris Johnson and his team are making makes me wonder if I have been betrayed.

Boris appears to rely totally on the unelected Dominic Cummings for policy decisions and now frequent U-turns.

From: Peter Rickaby, Selby.

IF Government departments were operated on business lines, where the person in charge was an expert, would Gavin Williamson or Matt Hancock be deserving of a first interview?

Of course not (Tom Richmond, The Yorkshire Post, August
18).

Hence the chaotic mess both departments are currently experiencing, leaving our children’s development and care of the elderly facing a very uncertain future.

I WORKED in Australia and New Zealand for quite some time and always felt a bit offended when people referred to the British as ‘Moaning Poms’, but this pandemic, and the reactions to everything the Government does, has shown me that we really are a very moaning nation.
