No Deal Brexit leaves Britain worse off with EU – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Ken Cooke, Ilkley.

MICHAEL Gilbert (The
Yorkshire Post, November 24) overlooks that the effect of ‘no deal’ with the EU would be split amongst the remaining 27 members, whereas any disadvantage to the UK falls entirely on us.

Based on 2019 figures, the UK exported £294bn to the EU and imported £374bn.

In the extreme case that all trade stopped, and crudely assuming the remaining 27 members had equal shares, the UK would risk all £294bn but the ‘average’ EU country would risk only £13.8bn.

I submit that the UK would suffer most.

From: John Turley, Dronfield Woodhouse.

MICHAEL Gilbert, like several other correspondents, claims that a no-deal Brexit will have more impact on Europe than the UK, on the grounds that UK exports less to Europe than we import from them.

However, like others, he makes the mistake of regarding the EU as if it was a single country, rather than being made up of 27 individual countries, so that any adverse impact on the EU will be diluted among 27 countries, although admittedly not in equal proportions. So the impact of a no-deal Brexit will be greater on the UK than individual EU countries such as France and Germany.
