No excuses for failure over flooding misery

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Holgate, York.

THE poor people of Malton and Old Malton who were flooded out of their homes in November 2012 are again suffering the same misery right now.

The flood defences have worked, but the drainage system is so old, badly maintained, clogged and generally unfit for purpose, residents have water backing up and coming up into their houses via the floorboards.

Rivers, ditches, drains, sewers and calverts are not dredged and cleared often enough because of “lack of money”, but our Government will willingly send money to “help” and “aid” foreigners all over the world. It is a scandal, no more, no less! Why are these people voted into power?

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington.

FOR the second time within weeks, we have the same towns being flooded up to the top of their business and homes, again and again.

In a few weeks we will have the country and its roads and railways brought to a standstill by snowdrifts. What has this said to the taxpayers and the commuters of the UK?

Simply the Government has not a clue, the Environment Agency is incompetent, the railway’s network engineers are hopeless and the local authorities have failed to sort out the outstanding mess that continues to leave their ratepayers abandoned by council chiefs after failing to repair the defences promised over many years. I say sack all the highly-paid officers, and get the skilled ground workers out to prevent the UK being swamped by the white collars in their grossly overpaid jobs behind their comfortable desks, where they will get gold-plated pensions when they are either retired or fired.
