REGARDING HS2 and the need to save money over its costs in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, having two lines north of Birmingham is of little benefit if you only have one line from Birmingham to London.

Most people will want to travel to and from London. Having just one line north of Birmingham would have several benefits.

The line could follow one of the existing routes for most of the way, but then be diverted to a hub somewhere between Manchester and Sheffield.

The line would then turn left to Manchester and right to Sheffield and Leeds. This would save building costs and would also create part of HS3 between Manchester and Leeds at the same time.

A park-and-ride station could be built where the lines divide.

This would give people the option of not having to travel into Manchester, Sheffield or Leeds to get on the train.
HS3 could then be extended west to Liverpool and east to Hull.

This option would be much cheaper and easier to build, and would probably deliver
high-speed rail in a much shorter time scale.
