Patriotism and sense of priority

YES, the UK can still put on a superb show as witnessed by the recent memorable Jubilee celebration, but marred by the appalling coverage by the BBC, to be followed hopefully by the Olympics – if we can afford it.

However, we are punching above our weight in overseas/political matters with David Cameron, William Hague etc anxious to get involved in the Syrian problems and the continuing and unjustified expense in terms of lives and commitment in the Afghanistan conflict.

Now that Russia and China have finally agreed to oppose any intervention in the Syrian conflict by outside countries, the UK should follow suit and resist the endless pontification by our politicians to get involved not only in Syria but anywhere else in the world where we have no direct association or agreement.

We should get our own house in order as a priority.

REPUBLICAN Malcolm Naylor (Yorkshire Post, June 13) looks to me like he shut himself off from reality during HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The party is certainly not over.

The dream he has was knocked hook, line and sinker on its head. In all, the Republicans have as much chance of being listened to as I have of riding the winner of the Grand National on a seaside donkey.

HOW refreshing to read Jayne Dowle’s article (Yorkshire Post, June 11): “There’ll always be an England to be uneasy about.”

How true!

It encapsulates the whole subject in words of less than 10 syllables.
