Plight of the unsung carers

From: Mike Padgham, Chair, Independent Care Group (York and North Yorkshire), Eastfield, Scarborough.

WHILE not wishing to enter the debate on the strike by GPs, the majority of whom do a fantastic job, I did want to highlight the plight of other caring professionals who find it less easy to garner public attention.

Carers work around the clock in all weathers and all times of the year – including bank holidays, Christmas and Easter. They do all this for extremely modest pay or in some cases no pay at all.

Isn’t it time that, as a society, we recognised these unsung heroes and many others like them and put proper funding into social care to enable them to be properly rewarded for a job well done and appreciated by hundreds of thousands of people?

Donor fatigued

From: Ken Holmes, Cliffe Common, Selby, York.

I HAVE reluctantly decided to tear up my organ donor card. What few parts I have left that work I wouldn’t wish on my on worst enemy. Incidentally, it’s a damned diabolical disgrace that our Government can fund £218m per year to the likes of India and Pakistan at the same time as cutting funds to help our own infirm and elderly.

Heavy traffic

From: Tim Mickleburgh, Boulevard Avenue, Grimsby.

IN his letter, Coun George McManus (Yorkshire Post, June 19) is right to question the “lunacy” of millions commuting to work each day, especially in these times of fast electronic communications.

Mind you, I still remain in favour of high speed rail (HS2), knowing that the alternative under this Government will either be its scrapping or more spent on concreting over Britain.
