Politicians promise the earth but fail to deliver answers

From: TW Coxon, West Auckland Road, Darlington.

Your letters from John Watson and J Hutchinson (Yorkshire Post, September 20) expressing their concern at the wearing of veils represent the concerns many in the country have about the whole issue of immigration and the demands made by immigrants on British society.

The adage referred to “When in Rome” etc does not seem to apply to this country and maybe it should be rephrased “When in Rome do as you please” because successive governments have given our heritage away in their quest for popular votes which appears to be available to them all regardless of nationality.

I fear the situation is irrevocable because there is no will by our politicians to do anything but fob us off with meaningless rhetoric. Will anything be done? No!

What a country we now live in. We have corruption in politics, police, banks and public services. Big business does not have a particularly endearing record either.

Schools, hospitals and prisons, we are told, are overcrowded and understaffed and that we are living in an age of austerity, yet we can gladly contribute to the European deficit – unlike Germany – and throw money across the world as if there is no tomorrow.

Yet, we can find cash to fund incompetent hospital and bank managers, handsome pay-offs and employ ‘experts’ from America and pay them £250,000 a month to run ailing health authorities!

Nor does it end there. We are in the silly season of party conferences when the Cleggs and Milibands of the world promise the earth in pursuit of votes but they are not able to find answers to the problems besetting the country here and now.

Maybe we need Angela Merkel?

WE, the public, get shut of one devious scheme to rob us, the loan shark, but this is swiftly replaced by the smiley face pay day loan – legal but just as devastating.

Next, the privately-run wheel clampers are reeled in, belatedly.

They need not worry! The next venture for them is in the pipeline – the drunk tank. As with clamping they can target the public at random, with the added bonus of using physical force, dump them in a so called ‘drunk tank’ then charge an exorbitant fee for their services.

Humberside’s very own unwanted civilian Police Commissioner relished and supports this novel intrusion to fleece the public.

Just as thousands were illegally clamped, thousands stand to be falsely arrested.
