Relaxing virus restrictions for Christmas too risky – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Keith Massey, Bishopthorpe, York.

LIKE everyone else, I am heartily sick to death of this coronavirus crisis and its effect on my restrictions of living, and my mental state. Like everyone else, I am desperate to meet up with extended family on Christmas Day – normally about 20 of us over a hearty dinner – and was willing the Government to allow this. But not any more.

Covid-19 isn’t just for all-year round with an exemption clause for Christmas. It will be still as lethal when we are all together celebrating indoors in dangerous close proximity.

We’re going through the second lockdown and, by all the stats, the situation is looking much better for fewer hospital admissions and deaths.

Will Christmas celebrations compromise the fight against Covid? Will Christmas celebrations compromise the fight against Covid?

It will be a tragedy to go through all our endured sacrifice for 10 months only to be hit with funerals in January of those closest to us.

Perhaps the exception would be allowing children home a few days after weighing up all the risks for the over 60s?

Being over 70, my wife and I will just spend it together and enjoy it as best we can. I just want to see the end of 2020 and get to 2021 as quickly as possible. The vaccines are almost with us so why risk everything at this stage?

Hopefully, we’ll have a late Christmas dinner for the family sometime between spring to summer, including hugs and kisses followed by meals out, barbecues and good wine.

We need to be patient in this final hurdle. 2021 will be a good year to reclaim our lives back and celebrate with a national CV (Corona Virus) day! Jobs and businesses should be our serious priority – for the good of the country.

CAN I offer my heartfelt congratulations to our Prime Minister and his entire team for the superb way they have managed this pandemic.

Of course all the doom mongers and clever clogs in the Labour Party are saying with hindsight we should have done this differently and that should been started earlier, but with that calibre of hindsight, I would have been a multi-millionaire and the leader of this great country.

I tried to imagine Jeremy Corbyn and his comrades running the show but the vision was too horrendous for words.

My message to Boris Johnson is keep up the good work.

I HOPE that the public sector pay freeze also includes all MPs and peers too.
