Royal Family right to maintain silence over Harry's accusations: Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Bob Swallow, Townhead Avenue, Settle.

Am I the only person getting fed up of hearing Prince Harry winging about all that is wrong with his family?

Here we are in the middle of the worst crisis since possibly WW2 with folk struggling to just survive and he and his wife are making possibly millions from this minor domestic crisis.

Thinking about his comments re his part in the war in Afghanistan and how many Taliban he thinks he has killed, my dad - and I am giving away my age now - fought in WW1 around Arras, Passchendale and Ypres.

Like so many of that time he never spoke about his experiences until one day when I was just 16 I tackled him about them.

There was a long silence, then he said: “I will just tell you of one thing that happened to me then that is it. It was winter and I was separated from my mates in the cold and dark. I took shelter in a shell hole snuggling up to a recently deceased body to get some warmth.”

I thought about this then asked him, 'Dad, what happened when it went cold'? Silence, then looking at me as though I was an idiot. “I left it of course and found another.” I never mentioned it again.

There is nothing to glory in war. If you need any further evidence of this go on a tour of the WW1 battlefields in France and Belgium as my wife, sister and self did many years ago.

Some of the beautifully tended graves may be half a dozen in a small copse, others are so vast they just stretch into the distance. One early morning we were taken out in the early mist to view two such war grave cemeteries one Commonwealth the other German side by side. We were unable to see the full extent of either.

There is nothing clever about war whoever be the enemy. Churchill once famously said 'Jaw Jaw is far preferable to War War. Think on that Prince Harry and in the meantime give our Royal Family a rest. Sensibly in my view they make no comment.

I would think most families have words as the years go by and our Royals are probably no exception. But of course we don’t get millions for mentioning it.

How much longer are the media and gutter press going to pander to this spoiled two?

They should be ashamed of themselves for making the money from who and what they are.

They have had many bad words to say about their families and this country and I feel most of us would be over the moon to never hear from or see them again. There are more important issues and things to think about now to keep us going

My New Year wish is just that - keep them away from us.

If it wasn’t so tragically sad Harry’s whinge-athon would be hilarious. Here’s a man who has been in battle situations in Afghanistan and now moaning about having a row with his brother who, he says, knocked him down.

Promotion of the ‘Spare’ is Harry’s goal and nothing else.

My advice to Harry is, if he really wants his father and brother back, is shut up and say sorry for the trouble he has caused.
