School marks its own link to First World War

how lovely to read about Woodseats Primary School pupils researching their school’s direct and personal connection to the First World War (The Yorkshire Post, October 24).

They have learned a great deal through finding out about the school’s former teacher Alexander Shiell who was 
killed at the Battle of the 
Somme.

It was especially poignant to see their work featured on the day the Royal British Legion launched its Poppy Appeal.

Children will see an unprecedented amount of commemoration about World War One in this centenary year and teachers have a tremendously important job to do in helping them study the causes and effects of the conflict.

We are very proud to see more than 100 schools in Yorkshire – including Woodseats – working with Cornerstones’ “Fallen Fields” project to help them explore the complex 
and sensitive consequences 
of this hugely significant period in our history.

Sadly the First World War 
did not become the “war to 
end all wars” but it was 
the war which changed everything.
