Margaret Whitaker’s amusing “This shop is alarmed” sign (The Yorkshire Post, November 6) called to mind a 1980s one in New Market Street Arcade, Leeds, which read “Ears pierced while you wait.” I was tempted to ask if they also offered a postal service, but the grim visage behind the counter dictated otherwise.
