Sir Ken wouldn’t tolerate the attitude of Morrisons today

From: Ray Hoppkrofft, Barker Street. Todmorden, West Yorkshire.

FURTHER to Tom Richmond’s article (The Yorkshire Post, March 8) regarding Morrisons, and the subsequent letters received. When I moved to Todmorden, from Nottingham, I missed not having a local Morrisons store.

When Morrisons purchased the Safeway chain I looked forward to having a Morrisons, but was informed by the staff that the Todmorden store was not going to become a Morrisons. I therefore wrote to Sir Ken Morrison expressing my disappointment at the decision. In reply I received a letter from Sir Ken himself – in which he thanked me for my remarks and setting out that (in a change of mind) the Todmorden store was to become a Morrisons.

Compare that to the current situation. A few weeks ago, and wanting a battery, I noted that the particular battery I wanted was on the rack at two different prices, it transpiring that it was the higher price which was the “correct” price. When informing a member of staff about the anomaly it was met with indifference.

There is then the new arrangement of the store following the recent refit. Whereas the chilled foods are on one side of the store, the frozen foods are on the other side. I presume Morrisons’ reasoning being that you will be tempted to purchase other items from the shelves in between.

Returning to the attitude of some of the staff. While being served yesterday, a member of staff (who I presume to be a supervisor) came and spoke to the cashier. There was no “Excuse me sir, I just need to speak to the cashier”, she just went straight ahead and spoke to the cashier as though I wasn’t there.

Would Sir Ken have done that, or tolerated such behaviour from his staff? I doubt it.

Please allow me my two pennyworth on three matters.

Yes, I agree, Charlotte Leeming is by far the best co-presenter on Look North.

Can anyone explain all the fuss regarding King Richard and those dry bones?

And can we leave Morrisons alone now and maybe have a go at the remaining Big Four?

Anyway, having got that
off my chest, where would
we be without the Letters
Page? I invariably turn to it
first, followed by the Opinion page.

Thank you again for the new- look The Yorkshire Post.
