A sitting target over grammar

I WAS pleased to read the letter from Brian Sheridan (The Yorkshire Post, June 6). Much as I am in favour of preserving local dialect, I am “fair sloughened” by the many times commentators use the phrases “was stood”, “was sat” and worse, “was laying“ (how many eggs, I wonder?). I was standing whilst I thought about writing this but then I was sitting whilst I wrote it. Now I am lying down to recover.

i HAVE no racism in me and do not object to people from all over the world coming to live on this small island. But what does the hotelier do when his premises are completely full? He shuts the door of course.
