Space invaders in the skies

From: Ruthven Urquhart, High Hunsley, Cottingham, East Yorkshire.

I REFER to the recent publicity regarding airline extra size seating for “fat flyers” which will reduce the space for those of us of average dimensions.

Surely, it would be more pertinent and reasonable if, at the check-ins, passengers were individually weighed (as well as their luggage) thereby enabling the authorities to assess the total weight of the onboard cargo?

On a recent Ryanair flight, I was not even allowed on with a newspaper in my hand. It is just as well that they were totally unaware I had consumed a massive amount of chips and gravy the previous evening, thus increasing my “density” quite considerably!

Figures and the monarchy

From: Malcolm Hanson, Bachelor Road, Harrogate.

YOUR correspondent Malcolm Naylor (Yorkshire Post, July 2) quotes various “official” figures in his tirade against the monarchy and the Jubilee celebrations but what he does not say is that the pageant and the concert were both held in London and so a lot of “Northerners” could not afford the time or the money to travel to London.. There is a saying which springs to mind: “Figures can be made to prove anything.”

Your correspondent also derides King Charles and Queen Camilla. I presume he would prefer President Cameron or President Miliband or even more horrendous, President Blair.

Lords lunacy

From: JW Buckley, Aketon, Pontefract.

DUNCAN Anderson writes on House of Lords “reform” (Yorkshire Post, June 28) saying that if it is elected, then it becomes too much like the Commons. It will follow party politics, and will be ineffective to scrutinise the Commons.

Spot on! He has seen through the propaganda of the political parties. An elected House of Lords would be a disaster for democracy.
