Stop blaming Europe over Brexit, Boris Johnson, when it’s your fault – Yorkshire Post Letters

THE myth that Britain is ready for a no-deal Brexit was exposed months ago by the onset of Covid-19.

Long gone is the time when this Government could pretend otherwise. Now we have the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee telling us of the risks of the virus colliding with a “disorderly Brexit” (The Yorkshire Post, July 30).

We could have extended the EU transition arrangements beyond December – but only before a June deadline.

Britain is still on course to leave the European Union on December 31 when the current transition period ends.Britain is still on course to leave the European Union on December 31 when the current transition period ends.

This Government chose not to take that sensible option. It has now painted itself into a corner.

It must secure an EU deal by the end of this year.

If not, how many other companies will follow a prominent local example seen only this week? (Hesco cuts 43 jobs in move to Poland, The Yorkshire Post, July 29).

Groups such as Leeds for Europe want it to be a deal that secures our EU access and the values we share with our immediate neighbours.

If Boris Johnson fails then he should – although past behaviour suggests he will not – accept responsibility for the consequences.

No more excuses, no more lies, no more blaming Europe.
