Stop the countryside drowning under rubbish

From: Sue Cuthbert, Newton on Rawcliffe, North Yorkshire.

In reply to the letter from SC Harrison “Concern over litter problem” (Yorkshire Post, March 9), I am completely in agreement regarding the litter seen in Leeds and understand the frustration in dealing with the authorities involved over their intransigence.

We are supporters of Bill Bryson’s Stop the Drop campaign. Anyone who logs onto this will find the relevant bodies to contact about areas of litter and fly tipping.

Anyone who saw Mr Bryson on Countryfile last Sunday will have heard about how many millions of pounds it costs to clear litter.

This week, we drove from Malton to York through a rubbish dump, sorry the A64. Judging by the type of litter we saw, it had been thrown from vehicles by dirty, lazy, selfish individuals who care nothing for our countryside, or the people and creatures living in it. Why?

I would like to see other high-profile people like Bill Bryson be involved in public awareness about this shocking state of affairs. People like, for example, famous football players, pop stars or anyone involved in educating young people. It is not “cool” to throw litter out of cars. Take it home.

I would also encourage anyone who sees litter near their home to pick it up. They might even feel good about that. This week, we collected two bin bags of litter from Yatts Brow bank near Pickering. I was sick of driving past it, but we felt it needed doing.

I know we are not the only concerned ones, as there are many groups who do litter picking. We must not let the countryside drown under rubbish.
