Striking teachers need lesson on absenteeism

From: Diana Priestley, Fixby Road, Huddersfield.

THE teachers are planning more strikes. This raises a question: if children miss one or more days of their education, does it matter (Jayne Dowle, Yorkshire Post, October 3)?

I ask because my granddaughter, at a small rural junior school, is required to ask permission to go on holiday in term time, including one day absences.

Last year a letter to parents stated that no-one was allowed to take time out in May because of Sats.

My granddaughter was not then in a Sats class.

Striking teachers are giving a clear message that a day or two out of education is not a problem.

They should then drop their absence restrictions.

They really should not have it both ways.

JAYNE Dowle has hit the nail on the head with her article about the teachers’ strike and the training days.

If a parent has to pay a £120 fine for taking a child out of school on a school day, then each parent whose child was deprived of education on strike days or training days should be paid £120 to pay for childcare.

This money should come from teachers’ salaries on strike days and school funds on training days.

What’s good for one must be good for the other.
