Supermarket advert was a waste of store space

From: MJ Wadley, Olive Grove, Harrogate.

does it happen only to me? If it does, how can I avoid it?

Having previously mentioned my experience with a no telephone contact supermarket, I have now come up against the following with another local supermarket.

I needed to replace my electric toaster and in this other supermarket was displayed a photograph approximately 20 inches square depicting an electric kettle and toaster as if they were on offer as a pair.

The toaster showed that it had a very clear control panel, which got my interest. However, I could not find either on display.

On subsequent visits to the store, I asked numerous staff members and was told each time that they did not stock them.

By this time I was nearly convinced, but to be sure I contacted the store manager on the shop floor.

He confirmed that they did not stock those models. Then why was the photo of the kettle and toaster on display?

To show that kettles and toasters were sold here!

I remarked as to how confusing that was to the potential customer.

I contacted head office about the ludicrous situation of advertising in store a product that was not stocked.

Already being aware of the situation, they assured me that the photo had now been removed.

My next visit to the store established that it had not. It was not now visible because unrelated cartons and boxes had been placed in front of it, totally obscuring it from view.

I don’t know if that action was inadvertently carried out or it was the use of a good old British compromise.

I thought what an incredible waste of store space, but at least it met my objection.
