FURTHER to the recent articles and letters calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks, I agree that fireworks are a big nuisance and also a feature of anti-social behaviour.

The use of fireworks, be they organised or not, cause untold fear and anguish to the elderly and animals alike.

But far from calling for a ban, I suggest a punitive tax on the sale of such products which is increased annually by an inflation factor.

This action would, in time, lead to a natural decline in sales (experienced with tobacco products) and an improvement for our daily life, not to mention the environment.

From: Andrew Mercer, Guiseley.

THE imposition of lockdown rules, before the nationwide clampdown, has not deterred the sale – and ignition – of fireworks at all times of night and day in my area for days. Not only should use of fireworks be prohibited, unless at an organised display (thankfully not possible this year), but I suspect their detonation is attracting gatherings of significant numbers of people.

I hope the police catch just one person – and then make a serious example of them.
