The once and future king

YOUR correspondents Ken Holmes and Martin Stern (Yorkshire Post, February 12 and 16) rightly advocate the return of a couple of characters whom the country would welcome back to restore both our stability and solvency.

However, I feel that we should all of us travel to Birdoswald where King Arthur was slain in battle or to Glastonbury, the site of his burial place, and exhort him to return.

Legend has it that should England ever be in dire straits, as indeed we are and have been for some considerable time, then Arthur, the “once and future King” according to Sir Thomas Malory, will arise and free his people from tyranny.

So, forget Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes, come back Arthur son of Uther Pendragon, your country needs you!

Giving our time to Big Society

THE “Big Society’s” intention as I understand it is to encourage people to undertake voluntary work in their community – very commendable. In the York Council’s administrative area I’ve been told are 3,000 voluntary groups. Just how much more will David Cameron be expecting of us? I appreciate that York is a more affluent area than say Castleford or Wakefield, but that shouldn’t prevent people from the poorer areas practising self-help – for themselves and immediate family. Not all help is money-based and normally time given can be more beneficial.

Ignore EU fine

CAN we hope that the UK Government holds firm on refusing to allow prisoners the vote? If the EU issues a fine, it should be ignored, just as other EU countries ignore laws that don’t suit them. France has never paid the fines demanded over the fiasco of British beef and lamb many years ago.
