True heroes of sport

From: Malcolm H Peacock, Ash Tree Road, Bedale.

WHY don’t we make John Watson (Yorkshire Post, July 25) Prime Minister? Along with David Davis back as Home Secretary, and dare I say it, myself in control of our borders? I am sure an improvement would soon be noticed!

On a more serious note, thank you for featuring on your sports pages the cyclist Mark Cavendish winning his fifth stage in Paris on this year’s Tour de France (Yorkshire Post, same date).

These are the most understated sportsmen in the world: three solid weeks of toil in Europe’s severest terrains, averaging 25-plus mph in all weathers.

It certainly makes the efforts of some of our Grand Prix heroes pale into significance given the rewards they receive.

Teachers not allowed to act

From: Iain Morris, Caroline Street, Saltaire, Bradford.

TEACHERS have had the tools of the trade taken away from them.

When I was a student in the post graduate school of education at Manchester Polytechnic in 1971/2, it was far simpler. Boys were brought into line when it came to their behaviour and there was no such thing as excluded kids. However, if parents have failed in their duty, teachers are no longer allowed to teach kids how to behave, which in my view is responsible for the sort of society we have today.

Power failure

COULD you please ensure that reporters writing on energy matters (Yorkshire Post, August 1) understand the difference between energy and power and the appropriate units in which these are measured.

Your reporter says that “the solar technology has been responsible for generating 10,454 MW of energy...” MW are, of course, units of power. The appropriate energy units are MW-Hrs (Megawatt-hours).
