Vote on Europe through TV

From: Louis Shawcross, Inns Court, Hillsborough, Co. Down, Northern Ireland.

TELEVOTING could revolutionise democracy throughout the world. Why is it on shows like X-Factor that votes can be tallied within hours yet we’re being promised a referendum on Europe sometime at the end of 2017?

This promise from David Cameron won’t mean a thing if there’s a change of government between then and now. New Labour have back-tracked on their 2005 promise of an EU referendum. It seems obvious that the political parties want to avoid a referendum on Europe, yet to have one could be easily organised.

Why is televoting not an issue of debate in Parliament? Is it because the powerful want the appearance of democracy without ordinary people having a meaningful say in the running of the country?

Payout for Mau
Mau wrong

From: Jack Kinsman, Stainton Drive, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire.

IT seems completely wrong for this excuse for a government to give millions of taxpayers’ money to the retired Mau Mau who used to kill babies, cut off their heads and use them as footballs while at the same time ignoring all the servicemen who were used as “test dummies” on the atomic and hydrogen bomb trials in Australia in the 1950s.

Most of these servicemen died horrible deaths due to lack of care and protection. Makes you proud to be British, doesn’t it?

Great viewing

CLARE Balding was amazing on her recent TV programme about suffragette Emily Davison who died at the Derby 100 years ago.

She allowed her compassion to overrule her professionalism; which made fantastic television.
