We don’t need face masks to enjoy Whitby’s fresh seaside air – Yorkshire Post Letters

I CANNOT understand why Janet Berry (The Yorkshire Post, September 7) was shocked that not many people wandering Whitby’s streets were wearing masks. Why on earth should they? I suggest she limits her seaside visits to Hornsea or Withernsea where her patronage will be warmly welcomed.

Like 99 per cent of the population, I am no expert but I don’t believe that just taking a few seconds to pass people will pose a threat to me. We are certainly not complacent, but we visit these busy places to address our mental and physical wellbeing. Walks along the wonderful piers are quite literally a breath of fresh air and our favourite chippy is Hadleys.

I hope the Goth weekend is successful. I will be there and, if I were younger, would dress for the occasion.

I READ Janet Berry’s letter of her visit to Whitby with interest. We, too, visited Whitby last Saturday and indeed it was very busy with people enjoying themselves.

Like Janet, we, too, were shocked by no one wearing facemasks – we appeared to be the exception. People were meeting in groups and queuing with no social distancing.

It was as if everybody was thinking everything was back to normal.

It would be tragic if we had to go back into a lockdown situation again.

The daily infection rates appear to be rising, and if we all don’t keep vigilant, the situation may drastically deteriorate again.

From: Phyllis Capstick, Hellifield.

MASKS, or face coverings, should not be mandatory any longer. They should be, as in reality that is what they have always been, a personal protection, decided upon by the individual and not as we are told by “experts” to protect everyone else. Everyone else must decide for themselves what is best for them. If that means shielding, all well and good. If anyone is unable to decide for themselves, then others must decide for them, and take care of them. Epidemics, and even pandemics, will always come and go, but we must carry on, as we have done in the past.

From: Andrew Mercer, Guiseley.

WHAT has happened to supermarkets (The Yorkshire Post, September 8), like Morrisons, limiting entry to stores, as they did during the lockdown? Now it’s a free-for-all.
