Why the time for fracking is over – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Kevin Hollinrake, Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton.

I STAND by my comments made to the Ryedale Environmental Group and raised by Angela Cole from Westow (The Yorkshire Post, January 14) that the time for fracking is over.

I fully support the Government’s recent announcement of a new ambitious commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 68 per cent compared to the 1990 levels by the end of the decade.

To achieve this, we have shifted focus to supporting green technology and renewable energy through a 10-point plan which will create 250,000 British jobs by 2030. This will include offshore wind, driving the growth of low carbon hydrogen; investing in carbon capture, usage and storage and delivering new and advanced nuclear power.

The aim is for the UK to produce enough offshore wind to power every home, quadrupling how much we currently produce to 40GW by 2030. The North Sea Transition Deal will ensure that areas like Teesside and Aberdeen can become global hubs for wind energy, carbon capture and other clean technologies.

It is an ambitious plan, but one which I welcome to fulfil our commitments and play a leading role in tackling climate change.
