Opinions sought on heritage assets

RESIDENTS in Cleethorpes are being invited to help decide which sites in their area should be treated as heritage assets.

North East Lincolnshire Council has drawn up a provisional list of historically important sites that will help inform planning decisions by highlighting those of special local interest.

It will be the first time Cleethorpes has had its own Local List and comments on suggested sites can be made until December 7.

The draft schedule includes historic buildings, archaeological sites, designed landscapes, memorials, shipwrecks and historic vessels.

Coun Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for regeneration and environment, said: “The list includes buildings and other assets that are the best of their kind in the authority. Some assets are included because of the contribution they make to the character of the local area.

“We welcome people to send us their views on the list. Perhaps they think we’ve missed something off. We will take all comments into consideration before publishing the final list early next year.”

Jason Longhurst, head of development for the council, added: “The Local List for Cleethorpes is entirely new and builds on the evidence we already have. We are also working on new and updated lists for Grimsby, Immingham and the villages.

“These lists will help us continue to protect and enhance the environment in North East Lincolnshire for residents and visitors alike.”

The list, created by North East Lincolnshire Council and Balfour Beatty Workplace, includes historic assets taken from the North East Lincolnshire Historic Environment Record. These sites require the greatest attention from developers and planning officers during the development process and regeneration schemes.
