Opponents batter chip shop proposal

An empty amusement arcade on Bridlington seafront could be come a fish and chip shop despite protests from rival businesses.

East Riding Council officials admit that the plans for the arcade on Garrison Street are a departure from policy, but say "there are mitigating circumstances."

Other takeaway owners have written in objecting, saying another food outlet is not needed.

But those behind the plans say the nearest fish and chip shop is on the harbour and peak times crushing "poses a risk of people falling into the harbour".

The backers also say amusement arcade turnovers are declining generally and 250,000 is needed to keep the business going "with no guarantee of success."

Planners say "potential demand and competition are not material considerations when determining an application."

"It is considered that an additional takeaway in this location would not significantly alter the balance between the range of facilities that are available to visitors to this part of the town, particularly given that it occupies a seafront location."

They are recommending approval at a meeting on July 5.
