Organisers hail 'golden period' success for show

INCREASING interest, large crowds and an upbeat atmosphere contributed to the latest instalment in what is being called a "golden period" for the Great Yorkshire Show.

This was the view of Nigel Pulling, chief executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, who said he was very pleased with how the show's 152nd outing had fared.

While conditions remained mainly fine there was a torrential downpour late on the Wednesday which caused one of the last horse events to be cancelled half way through and resulted in some minor flooding in the food hall and president's box.

However quick action from organisers and stewards ensured all was dry for Thursday morning resulting in no impact for visitors.

Indeed show jumping competitors remarked as to how dry conditions were in the main ring, despite having had nearly and inch of rainfall the night before.

"It has gone really well," said Mr Pulling. "We have had some interesting weather to say the least but most days have been fine and people have had an enjoyable time. The show goes on no matter what the weather is like."

Traffic remained slow but steady with no significant problems being reported. Save for a brief shower in the early afternoon conditions were mainly bright and windy with sunshine breaking through in the late afternoon.

While unable to give an exact figure on crowds, Mr Pulling said he was expecting a final figure of between 125,000 and 130,000.

Mr Pulling said: "Looking at the crowds for the first two days they seemed very much on a par with last year."

Work will now begin on dismantling the hundreds of stands and exhibitions as the showground slowly falls silent again.

However bosses will be already looking ahead to the 2011 show.

"In about six weeks we will be moving on to next year," he said.

"People love the Great Yorkshire Show and that is fantastic but we are always looking for new recruits. I think we are in a golden period for the Great Yorkshire Show and it is my job to make sure that continues."
