Paintings emerge from shadows

A PAINTING by a man considered one of the greatest marine artists in the world will see the light of day after 30 years to celebrate the completion of a mammoth website featuring all the UK’s oil paintings.

PS Waterwitch by Hull-born John Ward, showing a paddle steamer off the Humber basin, which sailed between the city and London in the 19th century, goes on display at Hull Maritime Museum from February 14. It has not been exhibited since 1981.

Robin Diaper, curator of Maritime and Social History for Hull Museums, is pictured with the painting, one of a number coming out of storage to mark the completion of Your Paintings, a website for the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, created by the BBC and the Public Catalogue Foundation.
