Parades join forces to turn city centre into festival of colour

THE centre of Bradford became one big colourful carnival as two parades joined forces to swell civic pride.

The Lord Mayor's carnival parade, which marked the International Year of Biodiversity through the iconic image of the tiger, attracted more than 1,000 adults and children who wound their way through the city centre on Saturday.

The parade set off from Northgate at noon and stopped for musical and dance performances along Darley Street and Bank Street.

For the first time, the carnival parade and the Lord Mayor's civic parade took place simultaneously.

The Lord Mayor, accompanied by councillors, senior council officers and representatives from partner organisations attended the civic service at Bradford Cathedral and afterwards paraded to the city centre.

The two parades joined at Hustlergate and continued along Tyrrel Street before ending on Centenary Square.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Peter Hill said: "This is a great city centre event and was even more special this year by including the Civic Parade.

Coun Rev Paul Flowers, Bradford Council's executive member for culture, tourism and sport, said: "This is always a momentous event in Bradford's calendar."
