Paralympian plans cycle marathon

AFTER competing at the Winter Paralympics in March a Leeds woman has now set herself another challenge.

Jane Sowerby, of Guiseley, Leeds, is planning to cycle 70 miles from Ben Nevis to The Cairngorms with other members of the British Disabled Ski Team.

Ms Sowerby, who was left paralysed after a fall, will compete the ride on a handbike, using her arms to power the cycle, while others taking part in the challenge include amputees, visually impaired and wheelchair athletes

The route they will take on their Scottish adventure will see them climbing nearly 2,500ft on Saturday .

She competed in the paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, in March, despite suffering a serious injury close to the games.

"Last season was hampered by injury for me; I broke my collarbone twice – once at the start of the season, then again just six weeks before the Paralympics. I worked hard to get fit and

still make it to the games, but wasn't on best form. So I'm determined to make up for it this coming season, and the handcycle ride is a great positive way to start.

"I've been training really

hard for it but am still very nervous about those uphill climbs in hilly Scotland. My poor shoulders won't know what's hit them."

The event has been organised to support British disabled alpine skiers and help them achieve success.

Jane added: "Myself and some other team members are trying to raise money we desperately need for Disability Snowsports UK and the British Disabled Ski Team. Alpine Skiing is the least funded Paralympic sport in Britain.

"We need a good support network and professional team structure to enable us to compete successfully against the alpine nations," she added.
