Paramedic hit by car thief at crash scene

A paramedic was knocked down by a thief who stole his car and drove at him as he was tending to road crash victims.

The unnamed medic who works for the Northwest Ambulance Service was helping at a crash in Birkenhead, Merseyside, on July 28.

Seeing the thief get into his Audi RS4 the paramedic stood in front of it to try to stop the man driving off.

But the thief accelerated at him. The paramedic was hit by the corner of the bonnet and the offside wing mirror and fell into the road. He was left with a grazed left elbow.

The Audi was later recovered with all its contents but without its keys near a pub a few miles away.

Detective Constable Sarah Casement said: "An attack such as this, on a paramedic who was helping an other at the scene of a traffic collision, is despicable.

"Thankfully the car was recovered with all of its contents, however it has meant that it was off the road for a couple of days, while its locks were changed."

Derek Cartwright, director of emergency Services at North West Ambulance Service, said: "I am at loss to understand the reason behind mindless actions such as this, against a service which exists purely to help people."
