Passengers urged to track down hidden gems

Train passengers are being encouraged to explore the villages, towns and stunning countryside that can be accessed from the Penistone Line.

This week members of the Penistone Line Partnership will be holding an event to showcase places to visit and things to see and do within easy reach of the Penistone Line and which will see the launch of a new guide designed to promote the area. The line links Huddersfield and Sheffield, and provides opportunities to discover this often forgotten part of Yorkshire.

The free event runs from 11am to 3pm at the Lower Hall of St John’s Community Centre, Church Street, Penistone, on Thursday.

It is free and open to everyone to enjoy music, information, activities and local food in a celebration of the wealth of activities and beautiful scenery along the line. Over 40 guests will be coming to Penistone from Huddersfield aboard a special music train courtesy of Northern Rail, the rail operator that runs the service on the line.

At the event a new brochure will be launched entitled: “20 things to do along the Penistone Line.” This free guide has information of things to do within easy reach of stations along the line and aims to get travellers to explore the villages, towns and stunning countryside that can be accessed from the Penistone Line.

Rowena Chantler, community rail officer for Penistone Line Partnership, said yesterday: “We are really proud to launch this guide which is full of fun activities and places to explore.

“We wanted to celebrate the fact that Penistone Line Partnership has its 20th anniversary this year by sharing these 20 brilliant things and showing everyone how much there is out there to see and do.”
