PC in court on death by dangerous driving charge

A POLICE officer appeared before magistrates today accused of causing death by dangerous driving after his patrol car hit a pedestrian near Doncaster.

Pc David Allen, 34, an officer with South Yorkshire Police, made a brief appearance at Leeds Magistrates' Court.

The prosecution follows the death of Ian Hambrey, 49, of Denaby Main, near Doncaster, who died after he was struck by a patrol car driven by the South Yorkshire officer last March.

The incident happened in Doncaster Road, Denaby Main.

Allen was charged following an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The Commission said a second police officer who was a passenger in the vehicle with Allen would not face criminal charges.

Allen, who gave his address as South Yorkshire Police Operations Complex in Tinsley, Sheffield, spoke only to confirm his personal details.

He was granted unconditional bail and the case will next be heard at Leeds Crown Court on February 2.
