Swimming pools are ubiquitous with Hockney - his most famous artistic creation is undoubtedly the 1966 pop-art painting The Splash - and this print is estimated to fetch between £250,00 and £400,000 at the auction.

A spokesperson for Phillips’ said of the artwork: “Instantly recognisable, David Hockney’s swimming pools are widely identified as the artist’s most famous motif and embody his fascination with post-war America.

“Flying into Los Angeles for the first time in 1963, Hockney looked out of the aeroplane window and was immediately captivated by the striking blues of the countless swimming pools scattered throughout the city below.

“Swimming pools became a motif through which he visually defined Los Angeles, and they illustrate his perception of the city as a liberal, prosperous, and sun-drenched utopia.”

A Picasso inspired self portrait from 1968 will also go under the hammer and is set to fetch up to £20,000.

The piece, from a private Yorkshire collection, was created using a technique crafted by Hockney to bring photocopiers into his work.

A spokesperson for Phillips’ explained: “The process of creating a home-made print followed the basics of traditional color printing techniques: Hockney used a separate piece of paper for each color and copied these onto successive sheets, in a similar fashion to how a printer would produce lithographs from plates.

“The standardized paper sizing of a photocopier automatically aligned areas of color and eliminated the intermediary stages of using separate stones or plates.

“By printing from paper to paper, layering shapes as he went, Hockney’s original marks were immediately transferred, allowing him to experiment with colour and texture in real-time.”

Art inspired by Hockney’s Yorkshire features heavily in the auction.

An iPad digital creation entitled “The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 2011” shows a cacophony of colour.

Phillips’ spokesperson said: “Ever the innovator, as technologies have developed so have Hockney’s artist methods for capturing and recording the world around him. Nature, the age-old bucolic subject, is treated and transformed by Hockney with his modern and adaptable eye.”

The art is part of a series of over 50 digital drawings created by Hockney on the Brushes app on his iPad.

It could fetch up to £180,000 at auction.
