2 Land of Green Ginger is a late eighteenth century building in the city's Old Town.

In 2018 it was transformed into Dickensian England as part of the set for Armando Iannucci's comedy-drama The Personal History of David Copperfield starring Dr Who actor Peter Capaldi, Dev Patel and Iannucci.

Land of Green Ginger, which is just off Whitefriargate, contains what may be the world's smallest window - a slit once used by the gatekeeper of the George Hotel to look out for stagecoaches and customers.

Adam Fowler, from the charity The City of Hull & Humber Environment Forum, said: "2 Land of Green Ginger is an attractive and characterful Georgian building in Hull's most famous address.

"It commands a central position which you cannot fail to notice adding depth and intrigue to this part of the Old Town. It's a gem."

The three-storey retail unit, which occupies a triangular corner site, has two residential flats upstairs. It is on sale for £270,000.

Built as a house, the Grade 2-listed building was for many years occupied by Messrs Tesseyman leather merchants. More recently it has been a hairdressers and a tattoo shop.

No one is quite sure where the name of the street came from. It may just refer to the fact ginger was once sold or stored there.

Another suggestion is that a Dutch family with the surname Lindegreen, who were residents in the city in the 19th century, may have lent their name to the street as a corruption of Lindegroen jonger (Lindegreen junior)

A number of film-makers have beaten a path to Hull's Old Town in recent years.

ITV's period drama Victoria used the cobbled streets of the city's Old Town as did the makers of A Royal Night Out in 2015.
