Humber View Hotel: MP David Davis welcomes end of contract for asylum seeker accommodation

Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis said the Home Office’s decision not to renew the contract for the Humber View Hotel beyond July showed it was finally seeing sense.

He added the hotel, off the A63 outside North Ferriby, was in the wrong location for such accommodation and it had faced local opposition.

The Home Office has been contacted for comment.

The decision comes after asylum seekers first arrived at the hotel, in Ferriby High Road, in November 2022 after the Home Office chose to use it for accommodation.

East Riding Council challenged the decision in the High Court on the grounds that it was unsuitable but they were unsuccessful.

It was controversial at the time in part because locals and councillors felt they had not been consulted about the plans.

It initially housed 78 asylum seekers, among them people who had fled war and persecution, and the hotel has remained closed for normal business.

South Hunsley ward’s Cllr Margaret Corless said in July there were plans to increase the number of beds to 152.

Asylum seekers are set to be moved out of the Humber View Hotel to other accommodation in the Home Office’s estate in the coming weeks.

Asylum seekers remain at Hull city centre’s Royal Hotel and another at an undisclosed location.

MP Sir David said the Home Office’s decision was good news for the local area.

The Conservative MP said: “The hotel has always been in entirely the wrong location for this kind of asylum accommodation.

“Locals were opposed to it. I was opposed to it, and I had several meetings with the then Home Secretary and Immigration Minister to try to prevent the hotel from being used for this purpose.

“The Hotel has always been an important local employer and contributor to the local economy by hosting weddings, conferences, and other events. I hope it can quickly return to being used for its intended purpose.”

An East Riding Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have been informed that the Home Office is terminating the contract with Humber View Hotel as asylum accommodation.

“They have confirmed that it will cease being used at the beginning of July 2024, reflecting the contractual notice period of this property.”
