U-Boat museum goes under

LEEDS’s floating war museum has been forced to close its doors following its eviction from its former spot outside the Royal Armouries.

The U-8047 Submarine Museum, manned by self-styled captain Richard Williams, has a new mooring spot which does not allow animals, and the captain cannot stay on board overnight.

He says that without being there at night and without his three canine overnight guards – Officer Pippin and ASMs Patch and Toby – there to alert him to trouble, the boat is a prime target for vandals.

Capt Williams is now in a verbal wrangle over “contractual problems” with the Canal and River Trust.

“It’s a sad day for us today,” he said. “We just want to protect our museum.”
