'We're excited to be the first gay couple to marry at our Yorkshire wedding venue'

Two big milestones are on the horizon for Dominic Ward and Jordan Morris. The pair are set to legally marry at Leeds Town Hall this weekend, before celebrating their wedding day later this month.

Then, within a matter of weeks, their family could grow, as they are set to be signed off as adoptive parents in October and are hoping two children under two will soon join them for family life in Slaithwaite, on the outskirts of Huddersfield.

"It’s been a massive whirlwind. They say moving house and getting married in a year is challenging – we’re getting married and potentially going to end up with children within a month,” 32-year-old Dominic says.

"The [adoption] process has been great, really cathartic in a way, we’ve been getting to know more about each other in a very deep and different way. You think you know everything about each other until you go through a process like that.

"When myself and Jordan first started messaging, one of the first questions he asked me was what do you want in life? And I said four kids, a farm and animals. He was sold. We both wanted the same things.”

The couple met in 2021, set up on a first date by their parents, who had known each other for years,

"My mum was running a Covid vaccination centre in Huddersfield and Jordan’s dad went for a vaccination and they were chatting and he said Jordan had recently split up with his partner.

“My mum said the same about me and they basically set us up on a date. And the rest was history really. We hit it off straight away.”

Jordan, 33, who has a construction business, proposed to Dominic last summer during a roadtrip through the Rocky Mountains in Canada.

"Within a week we’d planned a big engagement party which we had in Holmfirth,” says Dominic, who works in an operational role in the NHS.

The couple were keen to have Yorkshire-based suppliers for their wedding day, and were conscious about working with those with experience with LGBTQ+ weddings.

"However it will be the first same sex marriage at our venue Lodge Farm in Thirsk and this is something we are super excited about…

"The first venue we went to see was Lodge Farm and we said yes there and then, we didn’t physically look at any more venues…

"We’ve had banter with them about things like the bridal suite because obviously there’s not a bride in this relationship.”

Their big day is set to take place with a celebrant on September 23, a week after their legal marriage on September 16.

"It’s been hectic flicking between working full-time, doing the adoption process and planning a wedding,” Dominic reflects.

"And we might end up with two children under two by the end of the year just to add to the chaos.

"It’s been carnage but it’s all going to be worthwhile.”
